Get started
- Install CaveText from the Chrome Web Store (listing coming soon) and pin it: click the puzzle piece next to the address bar, then the pin next to CaveText.
- Sign in: click the CaveText icon, then Sign in, and log in with your CAVELMS account. No account yet? Register at cavelms.com. Shortcuts only work while you're signed in.
- Add your first prompt: click the CaveText icon, then Dashboard, then Browse templates, and click Add on Summarize.
- Open an AI chat: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Z.ai, Kimi or Qwen. CaveText is already on for these.
- Type /tldr in the chat box. It turns into a prompt asking for a summary, with a menu to pick how many bullet points.
Good templates to start with:
| Type | You get |
|---|---|
| /reply | A reply to an email, in the tone you pick |
| /rewrite | Your text rewritten friendlier, more formal, shorter or simpler |
| /tldr | A summary in 1, 3 or 5 bullet points |
| /explain | Any topic explained at the level you choose |
| /quiz | A quiz on any topic, one question at a time |
Use a shortcut
Type the shortcut anywhere in the chat box. As soon as the last letter is typed, CaveText swaps it for the prompt. You don't need to press Space or Enter.
If the prompt has blanks to fill in, a small form opens first. Fill it in and press Enter to insert, or Esc to cancel. The form shows a preview of the finished prompt as you type.
Many prompts end with a line where you paste your own text, such as the email you're replying to. CaveText leaves the cursor there, so you can paste straight away.
Can't remember a shortcut?
Press Ctrl+Shift+Space (⌘+Shift+Space on a
Mac) in a chat box. A search box opens: type part of a name, pick a prompt with the arrow keys, and press
Enter. To use a different key, open chrome://extensions/shortcuts in Chrome.
You can also click the CaveText icon in the toolbar and click a prompt. It's copied, ready to paste anywhere, even outside AI chats.
Add a template
CaveText comes with more than 20 ready-made prompts for work, writing, study and teaching: meeting notes to action items, polite ways to say no, flashcards, essay feedback, lesson plans, rubrics, report card comments and more.
- Click the CaveText icon, then Dashboard.
- Click Browse templates and pick a category.
- Click Add. The template is saved in a folder named after its category, and its shortcut works right away.
Click Customize instead to change the wording or the shortcut before you save it.
Make your own
- Click the CaveText icon, then New snippet.
- Give it a name you'll recognize, like “Weekly report”.
- Choose a shortcut, like /weekly.
- Write the prompt. The preview beside it shows what will be inserted.
- Click Save or press Ctrl+S.
Choosing good shortcuts
- Start them with / so they never fire while you're typing normal words.
- Keep them short and easy to guess: /reply beats /emailreplyformal.
- No spaces. And one shortcut can't be the start of another: with /re saved, /reply could never be typed, so CaveText won't let you save both.
Blanks and choices
A prompt gets much more useful when part of it changes each time. Write these in curly brackets, and CaveText turns them into a form when you use the shortcut.
Write a {formmenu: friendly; formal; name=tone} email to {formtext: name=recipient} about {formtext: name=subject}.
Write a formal email to the finance team about my travel claim.
| Write | What it does |
|---|---|
{formtext: name=topic} | A one-line blank called “topic”. |
{formtext: name=class; default=Grade 7} | A blank that starts filled in, which you can change. |
{formparagraph: name=notes} | A bigger box for several lines. |
{formmenu: friendly; formal; name=tone} | A dropdown. The first choice is picked unless you write default= before another one. |
{formtoggle: name=Be blunt}Don't soften criticism.{endformtoggle} | A checkbox. The text inside is only included when it's ticked. |
{=topic} | Repeats what you typed for “topic” somewhere else in the prompt. |
Separate the parts inside the brackets with semicolons. The name is the label you'll see in
the form, so make it plain: “recipient”, not “r”.
For prompts that change more, {if: tone="formal"}…{else}…{endif} includes different text
depending on what was picked in the form.
Dates, clipboard and more
| Write | What it does |
|---|---|
{cursor} | Where the cursor lands after the prompt goes in. Put it where you'll paste or type next. |
{clipboard} | Whatever you last copied. Chrome asks your permission once, when you first save a prompt that uses it. |
{time: dddd, MMMM Do} | Today's date, like “Monday, March 2nd”. |
{time: YYYY-MM-DD; shift=+7D} | The date a week from today. Use D days, W weeks, M months, and - to go back. |
{import: /signoff} | Puts another of your prompts inside this one, so a shared ending lives in one place. |
Date parts: YYYY year, MMMM month name, MMM short month,
MM month number, D day, Do day with “st/nd/th”, dddd
weekday, h:mm A time like “3:05 PM”.
Already use Text Blaze? CaveText reads the same bracket syntax, so you can paste your snippets in as they are.
Other chat sites
To use CaveText on a chatbot that isn't in the list above, open it, click the CaveText icon and choose Enable on the site. Chrome asks you to allow it, once. A green dot in the popup means shortcuts are on for the site you're looking at.
To turn a site off, click Disable on the site in the same place, or remove it under Sites in the dashboard.
Your account and backup
Your prompts are saved on your CAVELMS account, so they appear on every computer where you sign in to CaveText. Your browser keeps a copy, so shortcuts still work when you're offline, but changes can only be saved while you're online.
A free account holds a limited number of prompts; the dashboard shows how many, like “7 of 10 snippets”. CaveText Pro (RM99 a year, on the CaveText page in CAVELMS) makes it unlimited and adds the master prompts.
Used CaveText before accounts? The prompts saved in your browser are copied to your account the first time you sign in.
To keep a copy, open the dashboard, then Backup → Export. You get a file you can bring back with Import. Import replaces every prompt on your account, so export first if you want to keep them.
If something doesn't work
- The shortcut stays as plain text
- Check that you're signed in and the site is on: click the CaveText icon and look for the green dot. If you just turned it on, reload the page. Shortcuts only expand when typed; pasting one won't trigger it.
- Shortcuts stopped working after an update
- Reload the chat page once. Pages that were open during the update still have the old version.
- “…would always fire before … finished typing”
- One of the two shortcuts is the start of the other. Pick a different one; see choosing good shortcuts.
